------------------- File: INSTRUCT.TXT ------------------- May, 1999 ------------------------------------------------- MODPATH Version 3.00 (V3, Release 2, 5-99) MODPATH-PLOT Version 3.00 (V3, Release 2, 5-99) ------------------------------------------------- Installation instructions for MODPATH and MODPATH-PLOT 1. If it does not already exist, create a directory named: C:\WRDAPP We strongly recommend that you use directory C:\WRDAPP as the root directory for installing the MODPATH files. However, if you choose to select another directory, substitute that directory name for C:\WRDAPP in the instructions that follow. Also, if you use a name other than C:\WRDAPP, you must set a system environment variable named WRDAPP equal to the full pathname of the directory. For DOS, Windows 3.x, or Windows-95, do that by editing the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. As an example, if you install the files under a directory named "C:\MyModels", you would add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: set WRDAPP=C:\MyModels IMPORTANT: 1. The directory name you select must conform to the older DOS 8.3 character convension. MODPATH and MODPATH-PLOT do not support long file or directory names. 2. For Windows NT 4.0, create an environment variable by going to the Windows Control Panel and double clicking on "System." Select the "Environment" tab and create the WRDAPP variable. You must have system administrator privaleges to do this. Follow a similar procedure for Windows NT 3.51. If you use the default directory name (C:\WRDAPP) it is not necessary to set the WRDAPP environment variable. 2. Change to directory C:\WRDAPP so that it is your current working directory. 3. Copy the files LOADMP32.BAT and MP3R2ZIP.EXE to directory C:\WRDAPP on your hard drive. 4. Make sure directory C:\WRDAPP is your current working directory. At the DOS prompt, type LOADMP32.BAT to install the MODPATH and MODPATH-PLOT files. The installation procedure will create the following directories: C:\WRDAPP\MPATH.3_2 C:\WRDAPP\MPATH.3_2\DEMO C:\WRDAPP\MPATH.3_2\DOC C:\WRDAPP\MPATH.3_2\MFOUTPUT C:\WRDAPP\MPATH.3_2\SETUP C:\WRDAPP\MPATH.3_2\SOURCE C:\WRDAPP\RUN The installation procedure will work properly even if these directories already exist. In cases where one or more of these directories already exist and contain files from a previous installation, the installation program will ask you whether files with duplicate names should be overwriten. Answer yes for each case to assure proper installation. Once the installation is complete, the files MP3R2ZIP.EXE, LOADMP32.BAT, and INSTRUCT.TXT can be deleted from your hard drive, if desired. 5. The batch files used to run MODPATH and MODPATH-PLOT are located in directory C:\WRDAPP\RUN. In order to run the programs from any working directory without typing the full pathname, you must add the directory C:\WRDAPP\RUN to your system search path. For Windows 3.x and Windows 95, do this by editing AUTOEXEC.BAT. For Windows NT, use the Windows Control Panel to edit the path variable. Restart the computer after you change the search path. You now should be able to run MODPATH and MODPATH-PLOT from any directory by typing the commands: MPATH3 and MPLOT3. To run the demo problem, change to directory C:\WRDAPP\MPATH.3_2\DEMO and run as shown in the MODPATH documentation report (USGS Open-File Report 94-464). To test the installation, run MODPATH for the first sample problem in the DEMO directory by typing the following command: MPATH3 PATH-S1.RSP To plot the results of that run, type the command: MPLOT3 PLOT-S1.RSP You should see a full-screen plot of the output. When you are done looking at the plot, press Enter to quit MODPATH-PLOT. After you exit MODPATH-PLOT the DOS window will remain in full-screen mode. Press "Alt + Enter" to return to a regular DOS window. 6. Check the readme and history files in directory C:\WRDAPP\MPATH.3_2 for additional instructions.
